My thoughts on OWS and Society [Nov. 15th, 2011|09:48 pm]
So, I've been thinking a lot about the Occupied Movement.  It's interesting, and makes me think in a way I haven't in a very long time.  I've seen a lot that seems wrong about our society, how it's currently structured and ruled, how information is disseminated and debated, how corporations work, and so very much more.  Of course, I feel like I'm in the minority.  That, of course, is the workings of our society.

All of this has me thinking about how to even view our society and its trappings.  Most of us don't really give much of a thought to it.  We view it as 'society', layered collections of people making decisions, trying to move 'forward' and make things ''better'.

I've been thinking a lot though, and finding it easier to think of these companies, governments, corporations, etc. as a biological organism.  Our society is now no longer a collection of people, but of a population of corporation and governments, with people the organs, hands, fingers, etc.

It's rather interesting, as this can apply all the way up to the Gaia hypothesis, in which the entire earth is theorized to be a single unified organism.

This has been proposed many other times.  This is called a Social Organism is sociology.  I've been trying to read up on it:
http://www.i-sis.org.uk/hannove.php

The whole idea in my head comes to viewing corporations and government as organisms.  They will consume as many resources as they can, in order to secure itself as well as possible.  It will do this at the expense its environment.

I view our corporate-government structure as sick.  It has become gluttonous.  Its systems are not flowing, and it is barely keeping its own body alive.

Entities are without morals.  They will act in their own best interest, and will encourage its parts (people) to do what is best for it.  It's part of our psyche to go along with the group.

I'm note quite sure where all this is going in my head, but I feel more connections forming, with a greater understanding of our society, and how absolutely fucked we are, unless each of us does something about it.  I know... most of us have become disillusioned, bitter... angry at what we see.  We feel useless.  What is our voice against this monolithic beast in front of us, dragging everything down?  We push against it, trying to carve out what we can, to live the best we can in an imperfect place.  However, this is not only disingenuous to ourselves, but to everyone around us.

You must show your ideals.  Don't just allow ignorance to propagate, just because you don't have the willpower to speak up.  "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing"  - while this is usually attributed to Edmund Burke, his real statement is much more powerful, and is directly relevant to the things I see today: "When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle."

Want to see the evil?  Just from today:
Yes, I know.  They were occupying a privately-owned park.  Yes, there are other ways to protest, but this was the way chosen.  It's been working, and doing this is probably going to cause the movement to become more unpredictable and hit back harder.  This move was inevitable, I think.

So, what will happen?  I don't know.  But I am planning to donate my own brainpower, talents, and time to help the things I find worthwhile.  That will include helping to change our society into what could be.  Into what should be.

Weird [Jul. 5th, 2010|03:46 am]
[Current Mood |contemplativecontemplative]

Most people who know me know that I tend to watch the sky a lot.  And most people know I tend to be pretty level headed.

Tonight I saw some UFO / USO (Unidentified Sky Objects).   I was around mile marker 120 on I-80 eastbound.  I notice two orange colored lights in the sky, and note to myself that they seem a bit bright, and really close for civilian aircraft.  As time passes, I see that they do not contain navlights or strobes, and seem to be flickering like fire.  They are definitely moving across the sky, and are not fast enough to be a meteor.

They seem to stop (or change direction away/towards me) and two strobe-like lights go off on either side of this formation, a few degrees away from each.  At this time, I see another light come in from my right, and stop.  I realize that I'm going to drive under it, and I do.  It was far enough to my left for me to lean over and see underneath it.  It was deep orange, and flickering like it had a soft fire under it.

As I looked back to the two in formation, I notice they are rapidly fading or moving away.  I then try to find the other one in my rear-view mirror, and it too has disappeared.

These things could be a great many things, but I know what they are not:
  • Civilian Aircraft
  • Meteor
  • Ball lightning
  • Atmospheric Reflection
  • Firework
What could they be?
  • Experimental Craft
  • Signal Flares
  • Prank / Joke
  • Some atmospheric disturbance I'm not familiar with
  • ???
I did a quick search, and I didn't see any military bases around the area I saw these things in.  Obviously, I can't give dimensions, altitude, etc... as these are very difficult to give with things in the sky.  I'll probably never know what they were, but they were enough to seriously distract me from driving.  I kind of wish I would have stopped to get out and look.

A bunch of kits were stolen from the hackerspace room at Notacon.  This wouldn't really phase me much, if it wasn't for the fact that this affected both Mitch Altman (http://www.tvbgone.com) and Jimmie Rodgers (http://jimmieprodgers.com/).  I was hoping that selling their kits would help them afford being there.  Instead, they are down a few hundred dollars.

This just reinforces the fact that people are stupid and untrustworthy.

Still feeling lonely, but I had a much better night.  At my WW meeting, found out I lost all the weight I gained while sick and then some (a total of 5.4 pounds lost!)

Also had a good meeting with somebody who really wants to help the hackerspace.  This makes me happy.

Time for dreams.
